In June 2006, the five municipalities of the Bjelasica & Komovi Region (Bijelo Polje, Berane, Andrijevica, Kolašin, Mojkovac) agreed in founding the Regional Tourism Organisation Bjelasica & Komovi (RTO).  The RTO is funded by annual financial contributions of all five municipalities.

The Austrian-Montenegrin Partnership supports the RTO by capacity building, marketing activities and in purchasing of sports goods for renting.

The region tourism strategy of Bjelasica & Komovi

The joint tourism strategy has been worked out with participation of app. 100 different stakeholders. They substantially influenced the design, conception, implementation and review of the tourism strategy. The pillars of the strategy are:

• Marketing and communication
• Visitor information
• Development of attractive tourism offers
• Development of a cooperative communication culture in the region.

Results achieved

• Development of a logotype of the RTO Bjelasica & Komovi
• Development of tourism offers in hiking, biking, kayaking, snow shoe walking and Nordic skiing
• Publication of visitor information material

Future activities

• To promote together with national and international organizations projects of support to private tourism businesses
• Launching the Internet presentation of the Bjelasica & Komovi region
• Developing further tourist offers such as climbing, fly fishing, tour skiing
• To improve existing offers in more visibility
• Producing marketing and guest information material
• To enlarge the area (and field of activities) of the RTO by including new members

RTO building – a model of Low Energy Housing

The new RTO building is a pilot project for low energy housing in Montenegro. Through its modern and energy efficient architecture, it became a significant landmark in the country. It represents very well the overarching sustainable approach of tourism development.  But the building also reflects the open cooperative communication culture, which is one of the principles of the RTO.
